***Beautiful Tiger Eye mixed with Iron ore or Hematite, is also known as TIGER IRON when these two minerals occur together, and were first described as Tiger Iron in the locality in Australia. I found this vintage highly chatoyant cabochon, carved by a master cutter, in the early 1980's in Southern California at an art festival. At that time, it was the first time I had seen what was described as Tiger Iron. This piece looks like no other I have ever seen, and has remained in my person collection for possibly 37 years! There is a stalactitic quality to this amazing piece in the way that it grew. Hard to get a good photo, but please see all NINE photos. I left the original label on the back of the stone. The artist I purchased it from was VERY OLD in the early 1980's. TIGER IRON CABOCHON measures exactly 30 millimeters wide X 40 mm tall, a standard size for cabochons OR 1 1/4 inch wide X a little over 1 1/2 inch tall. Flat on the bottom of stone and slightly domed on the top with a 2 mm beveled edge that you don't often see on a cabochon! Arrives in see through organza drawstring pouch.
Tiger Eye is a variety name of Quartz. Tiger Eye has a property called Chatoyancy, a word coined from the French "œil de chat," meaning "cat's eye" Chatoyancy arises either from the fibrous structure of a material, as in tiger's eye quartz, or from fibrous inclusions or cavities within the stone, as in cat's eye chrysoberyl. The best variety of Tiger Eye in the world comes from Northern Cape Province in South Africa and it is becoming harder and harder to find high quality Tiger Eye like this one these days!
A new interpretation of the origin of tiger's eye was recently given by Heaney and Fisher (2003): "Tiger's-eye is an attractive and popular gemstone that is ubiquitous in stores that cater to rock and mineral collectors. For more than a century, textbooks and museum displays have identified the material as an archetype of pseudomorphism, i.e., the replacement of one mineral by another with the retention of the earlier mineral's shape. Our study has revealed that the textures responsible for the shimmer of tiger's-eye do not represent pseudomorphic substitution of quartz after preexisting crocidolite asbestos. Rather, we argue that tiger's-eye classically exemplifies synchronous mineral growth through a crack-seal vein-filling process."
